There are things that work, and then just keep on working, and seem to have an everlasting life. Like when was the last time you ever wore out a hammer or an anvil?

A very long time ago, actually about 1978, I was the recipient of a promotional sales gift. It was a small solar powered 4 function calculator on a logo embossed case to remind me where to reorder. This was fairly advanced for the time. It was well before phones with calculators. Most phones were wired in, and the few mobile phones were the size of a large brick. It was a welcome addition to my briefcase. It soon became an old friend that travelled literally around the world and would become alternatively lost and then found in the black deep depths of multi compartment luggage.

With the advent of cell phones that weren't bricks, and laptops and tablets, these small calculators started to be about as necessary as the wristwatch. So, this old reliable 4 function calculator got used less and less and got lost more and more in the black hole of the travel bag.

Some things do wear out and die or no longer function as originally intended. That happened to this wonderful Solar 4 function calculator that was faithful from 1978 to 2025. After 47 years part of the far-right liquid crystal character display ceased to function. Though not totally dead, the last digit was now a 3 or a 5 or whatever you wanted to imagine it.
